At the Ocean of Light we believe that moral, spiritual, and values-based training for children and youth is essential in order to nurture their inherent capacities. Thus, students from Kindy to Class 6 participate in Moral Education classes which seek to develop essential virtues such as the knowledge of God, trustworthiness, honesty, and justice. They aim to build a strong moral framework that will assist children to achieve excellence in material, intellectual, and spiritual aspects of life.
“Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value,” wrote Bahá’u’lláh, the Prophet Founder of the Baha’i Faith. “Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.”
In accordance with that inspiration, we are working to bring forth these “treasures”—the nobility and beauty that are part of every person’s inborn nature.
The training they offer is a compelling response to the flood of messages that promote materialism and neglect the ideals of a healthy and prosperous society.
The emphasis is on helping children learn to reflect on and apply spiritual principles, such as love, unity and justice, to their own lives and to the lives of those around them.
The program adopts a participatory mode of learning where the Animator and participants learn from each other.
Groups of participants engage in activities such as artistic expression, discussion, drama, cooperative games, study of literature, story telling and acts of community service.
Those in their early adolescent years possess a sense of justice, eagerness to learn about the universe, and a desire to contribute to the construction of a better world.
The program helps them to form a strong moral identity and empowers them to contribute to the well-being of their communities and the world at large. By developing their spiritual qualities (virtues),
their intellectual capabilities and their capacities for service to society, the participants come to see that they can become agents of positive change in the world.
The Junior Youth Empowerment Program aims to assist students in Forms 1 to 3, as they move from childhood through to adolescence, to develop their spiritual qualities or virtues, their intellectual powers of expression, and their capabilities for service to society. These courses complement the academic programs provided by the school.
Students at Ocean of Light International Schools in Forms 1 to 3 participate in the Junior Youth Empowerment Program on a weekly basis. The program is facilitated by the study of focus texts that share stories, which have moral themes which junior youth can relate to. Facilitators (referred to as Animators) engage participants in a range of activities to facilitate understanding and application of principles.
